1. Yoon's party departure and first presidential debate

As the presidential election approaches, political events are unfolding rapidly.

On May 17th, former President Yoon Suk-yeol announced his departure from the ruling People Power Party(PPP).

And, the first TV debate among presidential candidates was held on May 18th.

▶Yoon Leaves PPP, No Apology for Martial Law

The People Power Party, which had opposed Yoon's impeachment, saw growing internal calls for his voluntary departure as the election neared.

On May 17th, Yoon announced his exit from the party. He supported candidate Kim Moon-soo, urging voters to "unite behind Kim and make sure to vote."

The party's chief spokesperson hoped this would be "a crucial turning point for victory against Lee Jae-myung in the presidential election," indicating expectations for a shift in approval ratings.

In response, Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung strongly criticized the move, stating, "They should have expelled Yoon if they were going to do it," and "It's truly problematic that the PPP leadership is trying to gloss over this without clearly apologizing."

The first TV debate among presidential candidates was held last Sunday, focusing on economic issues.

Four of the six candidates who qualified as "invited candidates" (Lee Jae-myung, Kim Moon-soo, Lee Jun-seok, and Kwon Young-gook) participated in the debate.

To qualify as an invited candidate, one must be nominated by a party with at least five seats in the National Assembly, or by a party that received at least 3% of votes in the previous election, or have an average approval rating of at least 5% in media polls.

The main topics of the debate were:

• Overcoming low growth & revitalizing the economy

• Trade strategy in the Trump era

• Enhancing national competitiveness

The debate saw intense attacks on Lee Jae-myung, who currently leads in the polls.

Candidates Kim Moon-soo and Lee Jun-seok criticized him for being "pro-China," a significant issue in South Korea given its divided status. Lee Jae-myung responded by emphasizing the importance of the US-Korea alliance while also stressing the need for diplomacy with Russia and China.

Lee Jun-seok also attacked Lee Jae-myung's 4.5-day workweek proposal, saying, "Lee Jae-myung lacks the 'how' and just says 'I'll do this and that.' He's the most dangerous type of person — like a cult that preys on people when they're vulnerable."

Meanwhile, Kim Moon-soo faced heavy criticism over martial law-related issues.

Democratic Labor Party candidate Kwon Young-gook even refused to shake Kim's hand, explaining that Kim had not apologized or acknowledged wrongdoing regarding the December 3rd emergency martial law.

Kwon asked Kim, "On what grounds are you running in an election caused by former President Yoon?" Kim responded, "Yoon's martial law was wrong, and I would have tried to stop it if I had known,” and “It's true that martial law has hurt small business owners and the economy."

The subsequent official TV debates are scheduled for May 23rd (social issues on KBS) and May 27th (political issues on MBC).

2. Suspects arrested for Blackmailing Son Heung-min Over Pregnancy

Last week, an issue related to Son Heung-min, captain of the Korean national football team and player in the English Premier League, became a hot topic.

Ms. Yang, Son’s former lover, is accused of extorting 300 million won last June by threatening to reveal she was pregnant with his child.

Mr. Yong, who had previous ties to Ms. Yang, is accused of attempting to extort 70 million won from Son this March, but failed.

The police arrested the two suspects on the 17th, judging that they might destroy evidence and flee.

▶Son's side: 'Stop threatening with false information'

Son Heung-min's side stated that "it's true that he met her with good feelings."

Ms. Yang demanded money in June last year, claiming she was pregnant, and Son gave her about 300 million won on the condition that she wouldn't expose the pregnancy.

However, Son's side added that "We had to comply with the extortion threat out of concern that spreading false information would negatively affect the player and the team" and stated that Ms. Yang's fetal ultrasound images were fabricated and she was never pregnant with Son 's child.

After breaking up with Son Heung-min, Ms. Yang became involved with Mr. Yong.

It's reported that in March, after learning about this issue, Mr. Yong demanded 70 million won from Son, threatening to "expose the pregnancy to the media."

Son's side decided to file a complaint against additional threats, stating that Son is a victim and they will respond without leniency to the people that have been extorting and threatening him.

▶Does extortion apply? Irrelevant to 'paternity'

'Gong-Gal [공갈, Extortion]' and 'Hyup-bak [협박, threat]' are words used similarly daily in korea. Both are Chinese characters, meaning actions that intimidate someone into feeling fear.

However, in legal terms, 'Gong-Gal [공갈, Extortion]' and 'Hyup-bak [협박, threat]' differ slightly.

According to criminal law, a threat crime refers to carrying out harmful actions that cause fear in the victim. In this case, whether the cause of the threat is actual or not does not affect the establishment of the crime.

Extortion occurs when money or goods are demanded and extorted using threats or violence. Therefore, extortion is punishable by heavier imprisonment or fines than threat crimes.

Currently, the police have confirmed Ms. Yang's abortion hospital records and stated that they have also found that the fetal ultrasound images were not manipulated.

However, the establishment of the crime is not related to whether Son Heung-min is the biological father, so Ms. Yang, who received 300 million won, is likely to be charged with extortion.

At the same time, Mr. Yong, who only made threats, is expected to be charged with attempted extortion.

💡News Bite

#A knife rampage occurred at a convenience store in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province.
An ethnic Korean from China in his 50s stabbed two people, injuring them. Later, two bodies were found in and around his residence during the investigation.

#SKT shows signs of attacks on servers managing personal information as well as SIM card data.
A second investigation into the SKT hacking incident revealed 18 more infected servers. Two of these are confirmed to be servers that temporarily manage personal information, suggesting the possibility of personal data leaks.

#A large fire broke out at Kumho Tire's Gwangju factory.
Fortunately, most factory workers evacuated on their own, and one man was injured and taken to the hospital. No additional casualties have been reported so far.

#Another worker fatality occurred at an SPC affiliate bakery factory.
The deceased is a woman in her 50s, reportedly caught by her upper body in a conveyor belt. SPC affiliates have had several worker casualties, leading to consumer boycotts.

#A Korean author's novel, "A Thousand Blues," will be made into a Hollywood film.
Novelist Cheon Seon-ran's SF novel "A Thousand Blues" has signed a film contract with Warner Bros. Pictures in the U.S.

This book has also been published in Japan, Germany, Taiwan, China, and the UK.

🇰🇷Korean Language Spotlight '꿀꿀하다'

*pronounce: Kkul-kkul-ha-da

The weather keeps changing between sunny moments and cloudy skies.

This week, early summer heat is expected, with daytime highs reaching up to 32 degrees Celsius. However, most of the country is forecast to have mostly cloudy weather.

On Wednesday, rain is forecast for the capital area, South Jeolla, South Gyeongsang, and Jeju Island.

The word '꿀꿀하다[kkul-kkul-ha-da]' is often used to describe such weather when it's hard to see the sun and the sky has a grayish tint.

This word can describe the weather, but it's also used to express that one's heart and mood are gloomy. 😞

Interestingly, this word is also a homonym of the pig’s oink sound, ‘꿀꿀[kkul-kkul]’! 😉🐷

▶Meanings

1. (Of mind or mood) To be in a depressed or unpleasant state.

   e.g. 전쟁이 일어났다는 뉴스를 봤더니 마음이 꿀꿀해.
   After seeing the news about the war breaking out, I feel gloomy.

2. (Of weather) To be cloudy or inclement.

   e.g. 날씨가 꿀꿀하다. 우산을 챙기는 게 좋겠어.
   The weather is gloomy. It's better to bring an umbrella.

3. Onomatopoeia represents a pig's grunt.

   e.g. 돼지가 ‘꿀꿀’하고 울었어.
   The pig grunted 'kkul-kkul'.

Somehow, gloomy weather often makes our mood feel down, too. 🥺

1. 윤석열 탈당과 첫 대선 후보 토론

대선을 앞두고 많은 정치적 이슈들이 휘몰아치고 있습니다.

17일 윤석열 전 대통령은 여당인 국민의힘 탈당을 공식적으로 선언했습니다.

또한 18일에는 대선 후보들의 첫 TV 토론이 열렸습니다.

▶윤석열 국민의힘 탈당, 계엄 사과는 없어

윤석열 전 대통령 탄핵에 반대 의사를 표현했던 국민의힘. 대선을 앞두고 당 내부에서 그의 자진 탈당을 권고하는 목소리가 커졌는데요.

결국 윤석열은 17일 국민의힘 탈당을 선언했습니다. 그는 “국민의힘 김문수에게 힘을 모아 달라. 반드시 투표에 참여해 달라”며 김 후보에 대한 지지를 밝혔습니다.

당 수석대변인은 이에 대해 "대선에서 이재명 후보에게 승리할 수 있는 중요한 반전의 계기가 될 것"이라며 지지율 변동에 대한 기대를 드러내기도 했는데요.

이에 대해 이재명 더불어민주당 대선 후보는 “한다면 제명했어야 한다”며 “국민의힘 지도부가 명확하게 석고대죄하지 않고 적당히 미봉책으로 넘어가려고 하는 것은 정말로 문제”라고 강도 높게 비판했습니다.

▶18일 첫 대선 후보 토론…다음 토론은 23일

지난 일요일, 경제 분야를 주제로 대선 후보들의 첫 TV 토론이 열렸습니다.

토론에는 7명의 대선 후보 중 ‘초청 대상 후보자’ 자격을 가진 4명(이재명, 김문수, 이준석, 권영국)이 참석했는데요.

초청 대상 후보자란 국회에 5석 이상 의석을 가진 정당의 추천 후보자, 혹은 직전 선거에서 3% 이상을 득표한 정당의 추천 후보자, 혹은 언론기관 여론조사에서 5% 이상의 평균 지지율을 획득한 후보자여야 합니다.

이날 토론의 중심 주제는 다음과 같았습니다:

• 저성장 극복 & 민생경제 활성화 방안

• 트럼프 시대의 통상 전략

• 국가 경쟁력 강화 방안

토론에서는 현재 지지율이 우세한 이재명 후보에 대한 공격이 거셌습니다.

김문수와 이준석 후보는 그가 ‘친중국적’이라며 비판하기도 했는데요, 해당 문제는 분단국가인 대한민국에서 중요하게 다뤄지는 이슈이죠. 이재명은 이에 대해 “한미동맹은 대한민국 외교·안보의 기본 축”이라고 말하면서도 러시아와 중국과의 외교 또한 중요함을 강조했습니다.

또한 이준석 후보는 이재명 후보의 주 4.5일제 공약을 지적하며 "이재명 후보는 '어떻게'가 빠져 있고 그냥 '이렇게 저렇게 하겠다'고만 말한다. "사람들이 어려울 때 옆에 사이비 종교가 다가오는 것처럼 가장 위험한 형태의 사람"이라고 쏘아붙이기도 했습니다.

한편, 김문수 후보는 ‘계엄’과 관련된 사안으로 맹공을 받았습니다.

민주노동당 권영국 후보는 이날 김 후보의 악수 요청을 거부하기도 했는데요. 권 후보는 그가 12·3 비상계엄에 대해 사과하지 않고 잘못도 인정하지 않았기 때문에 이런 행동을 했다고 설명했습니다.

권 후보는 그에게 “윤석열 전 대통령 때문에 치러지는 대선에 무슨 자격으로 나왔느냐”고 말하기도 했는데요. 김 후보는 “윤 전 대통령의 계엄은 잘못됐고, (내가) 알았다면 당연히 말렸을 것”이라면서 “계엄으로 인해 우리 소상공인이나 경제가 어려워진 점은 사실”이라고 인정하기도 했습니다.

이후의 공식 TV 토론회는 23일 사회 분야(KBS), 27일 정치 분야(MBC)로 예정되어 있습니다.

2. 손흥민에 '임신 협박'한 용의자 구속

지난주, 한국 축구 국가대표팀 주장이자 영국 프리미어 리그에서 뛰고 있는 손흥민 선수와 관련된 이슈가 뜨거웠습니다.

손흥민의 전 연인인 양씨는 지난해 6월 '임신한 사실을 폭로하겠다'고 그를 협박해 3억여원을 갈취한 혐의를, 양씨의 연인이었던 용씨는 올해 3월 손흥민 측에 접근해 7천만원을 받으려다 미수에 그친 혐의를 받고 있습니다.

경찰은 두 용의자가 증거를 인멸하고 도망할 우려가 있다고 판단해 17일 구속했습니다.

▶손흥민 측 ‘허위사실로 협박 STOP’

손흥민 측은 해당 여성에 대해 “좋은 감정을 가지고 만났던 것은 맞다”고 밝혔는데요.

양씨는 지난해 6월 아이를 가졌다며 돈을 요구했고, 이에 손흥민은 임신 사실을 폭로하지 않는 조건으로 약 3억원을 건냈습니다. 다만 손 측은 “허위사실 유포가 선수와 팀에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 것을 우려해 공갈 협박에 응할 수밖에 없었다”고 덧붙이며 양씨의 태아 초음파 사진 등은 조작된 것이며, 손흥민의 아이를 임신한 적이 없다고 입장을 밝혔습니다.

양씨는 손흥민과 결별 뒤 용씨와 연인 관계가 되었는데요. 용씨는 이 내용을 알게 된 후 지난 3월 손흥민에게 “언론에 임신 사실을 폭로하겠다”며 7,000만원을 요구한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

손흥민 측은 추가적인 협박에 고소를 결심했고, 손 선수는 명백한 피해자라며 공갈 협박을 해온 일당에게 선처 없이 대응하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

▶공갈죄 성립? ‘친부 여부’와 관계없어

‘공갈’과 협박’은 일상 생활에서는 비슷하게 쓰이는 단어에요. 모두 한자어로, 공포를 느끼도록 누군가를 윽박지르는 행동을 뜻하죠. 다만 법률상에서 ‘공갈죄’와 ‘협박죄’는 조금 다릅니다.

형법에 따르면, 협박죄는 피해자에게 공포심을 일으키는 해악을 실행하는 경우를 말합니다. 이 경우 협박의 원인이 사실인지 아닌지는 죄의 성립에 영향을 주지 않아요.

공갈죄는 협박 또는 폭행을 수단으로 금품을 요구해 갈취했을 때 적용됩니다. 그렇기에 공갈죄는 협박죄보다 더 무거운 징역 또는 벌금에 처해지죠.

현재 경찰은 양 씨의 임신 중절 수술 병원 기록을 확인했으며, 태아 초음파 사진이 조작되지 않은 점도 파악했다고 밝혔습니다.

다만 죄의 성립은 손흥민의 친부 여부와 관계가 없어 3억을 받은 여성 양씨는 공갈죄에, 단순 협박에 그친 남성 용씨는 공갈 미수죄가 성립될 가능성이 큽니다.

사망자는 50대 여성으로, 컨베이어 벨트에 상반신이 끼인 것으로 알려졌는데요. SPC 계열사에서는 그동안 여러 차례 노동자 사상 사고가 발생해 소비자 불매운동으로 번지기도 했습니다.
