๐Ÿ’กThis week's highlights

  • Gwangmyeong site collapse and National Safety Day

  • Jeju Tourist Rip-off Controversy

  • Trumpโ€™s tariff delay and fluctuating exchange rates

1. Gwangmyeong Site Collapse and National Safety Day

April 16th is the 'National Safety Day' designated by the Korean government.

On April 16, 2014, the 'Sewol Ferry Disaster' occurred, in which 304 precious lives were lost, including high school students.

Afterward, to ensure such an incident never happens again, the government enacted the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety in 2015, and designated the accident date as a memorial day.

However, in the Republic of Korea in 2025, safety-related accidents continue to occur ceaselessly.

โ–ถ Tunnel construction site collapse during reinforcement work

Last Friday, a collapse occurred at an underground tunnel construction site in Gwangmyeong City, Gyeonggi Province. Two workers went missing, and one 20-year-old worker was rescued about 13 hours after the accident. However, one person is still unaccounted for, and the search is ongoing.

There were warning signs before the accident. Early that morning, a report was received that cracks had appeared in the supports at the site. As a result, nearby roads were blocked. The construction company had stopped the work and was conducting inspections and reinforcement work, but the ground suddenly collapsed, causing the underground construction site to cave in and the road above to sink.

An investigation is planned to look into the part where work continued at the site despite concerns about the collapse.

โ–ถ Anticipated safety issues, and the accident two years later

The site where the accident occurred was also flagged in a audit report by the Board of Audit and Inspection two years ago, which stated that the "ground was in a 'very poor' condition of grade 5, with the rock crumbling."

The Board of Audit and Inspection reported in January 2023 that "despite the poor ground condition, the tunnel design did not include an 'invert' (a concrete structure to counteract ground heaving)."

Therefore, experts argue that the connection between the audit findings and this latest accident should be investigated.

โ–ถ Around 2,300 nearby residents evacuated urgently as ground subsidence continues

On the day of the accident, around 2,300 residents near the accident site were evacuated urgently. There was an elementary school with 1,500 students about 50 meters away from the accident site, and a 640-unit apartment complex was also located nearby. There was a risk of even greater loss of life if the scale of the collapse had expanded.

The nearby elementary school decided to close until Tuesday. While the school building itself was not damaged, cracks were reported in a part of the playground connected to the road.

According to civil engineering and geology experts, the ground is continuing to sink, and there are still concerns about further collapse.

โ–ถ April 16th, and our safety

On Sunday the 13th, a massive 5-meter-deep sinkhole appeared in Busan. Fortunately, no one was injured. However, there had already been more than 10 sinkhole incidents in the area, all of which were near urban railway construction sites.

That evening, a fire broke out at a clothing store inside Dongdaemun Station in Seoul, leading to the evacuation of around 50 people. The fire was extinguished in about 50 minutes.

April 16th is National Safety Day, but the sense of insecurity about safety is growing.

2. Jeju Island Tourist Rip-off Controversy

Jeju Island, located on the southern coast of South Korea, is a popular tourist destination for both foreigners and Koreans.

However, it has frequently been at the center of "Tourist Rip-off" controversies.

The term "ba-ga-ji" (๋ฐ”๊ฐ€์ง€) originally refers to a bowl made by splitting a gourd in half, used for scooping water or holding items. The idiom "Putting on a Ba-ga-ji" (๋ฐ”๊ฐ€์ง€๋ฅผ ์“ฐ๋‹ค) means being ripped off or being a victim of price gouging.

โ–ถ 'Six pieces of sundae for 25,000 won' sparks controversy again

At the Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival in March, food prices shared on social media reignited the Tourist Rip-Off' controversy.

In particular, public outrage was sparked when a tourist revealed that stir-fried sundae (Korean blood sausage) containing only 6 pieces was being sold for 25,000 won. Additionally, reports of ordering pork belly in Jeju Island only to receive meat full of fat, an expose of a whole hairtail fish dish costing 160,000 won, and posts about drinks and desserts costing nearly 100,000 won became hot topics on social media platforms.

As the controversies continued, Jeju Island announced that they would work on improving the prices of major dining-out items such as braised hairtail, pork belly, kimchi stew, jjajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles), and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), which are considered more expensive than the national average.

However, regarding the street vendors at the cherry blossom festival that were embroiled in controversy over the stir-fried sundae, a petition was submitted alleging that the company responsible for selecting vendors had demanded under-the-table payments from street vendors and forced them to use designated company tents. They raised the issue by arguing that since the vendors had to pay high fees to participate in the festival event, it created a structure where the street vendors had no choice but to charge exorbitant prices in order to make a profit.

โ–ถ Domestic tourists decrease... 416,000 fewer visitors over 3 months

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeju Island was the top domestic travel destination substituting for overseas travel. However, during this period, the abnormally rapid increase in accommodation, car rental, and restaurant prices led to a growing negative perception that 'Jeju = expensive,' and controversies over price gouging continued one after another.

In fact, the number of tourists visiting Jeju is decreasing.

In the first quarter of this year, fewer than 1 million tourists visited for three consecutive months. Looking at the entire first quarter, the number of tourists decreased by 399,000 over three months, approaching 400,000. In particular, the number of domestic tourists decreased by 416,000.

โ–ถ Jeju's average travel expenses 1.5 times higher than the national average

In the '2024 Jeju Visitor Tourism Survey,' travelers expressed high satisfaction rates of over 4 points out of 5 for food and tourist attractions. However, travel expenses (including prices at tourist sites) received the lowest score of 2.93 points.

According to โ€œConsumer Insight,โ€ a consumer research institute, the average daily travel expense in Jeju Island is 134,000 won. This is 1.5 times the national average of 88,000 won and more than double the 63,000 won travel expense of Gwangju, which is considered the most affordable city.

To improve this situation, Jeju Island is implementing various policies such as selecting 'Fair Price Establishments.' Fair Price Establishments are businesses chosen annually by the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province that 'provide good quality service at reasonable prices.'

Jeju Island in spring and summer is a beautiful island where you can see a variety of flowers and deep blue seas.

If you plan to visit, we hope you can enjoy a pleasant trip by checking the average prices in advance!

3. Trump's Tariff Delay and Fluctuating Exchange Rates

A single word from U.S. President Donald Trump is shaking the entire world.

Last Wednesday, Trump reversed his statement about imposing high tariffs.

He said he would raise tariffs on China to 125%, but would grant a 90-day tariff exemption of 10% to about 70 countries, including South Korea.

The soaring exchange rate immediately fell by about 60 won after the announcement of the exemption, but it is unclear when it might surge again.

โ–ถ Highest pre-exemption rateย 1,486 won โ†’ Lowest post-exemption 1,427 won

A day before Trump announced the tariff exemption, global markets were in complete disarray.

This was also the case for South Korea, where the exchange rate reached 1,486 won on April 8th, but has since maintained the 1,420 won range after the tariff exemption announcement. This is the lowest level in 4 months since December 6th last year (1,414.7 won).

In response to the U.S. tariff measures, China also retaliated with 125% tariffs, effectively severing bilateral trade. The potential for a U.S. economic downturn due to Trump's policies, as well as a series of unstable situations, are analyzed to have led to a sharp decline in the value of the dollar.

โ–ถ The reason behind the tariff exemption: the drop in U.S. bond prices?

The reason behind the tariff exemption is believed to be the 'drop in U.S. bond prices.'

These bonds issued by the U.S. government have long been considered the safest asset globally. However, after President Trump announced the reciprocal tariffs, U.S. bond yields skyrocketed.

Bond yields rise when the risk profile increases, and vice versa. In other words, as yields rise, bond prices and national creditworthiness fall.

Three main reasons have been cited for this:

  1. The possibility of China, the largest holder of U.S. bonds, selling its bonds

  2. The need for hedge funds to hold more cash due to the tariff policies, leading to bond sales

  3. Decreased trust in the U.S. due to Trump's policies

โ–ถ Exchange rate fluctuations expected next week... Semiconductors and electronics targeted

Nevertheless, the Trump administration has declared that it will continue its tariff policy. Trump stated that item-specific tariffs on semiconductors will be implemented soon, and the tariff rates will be announced next week.

This is expected to have a significant impact on the global electronics industry. In particular, South Korean companies like Samsung Electronics, LG Display, and SK hynix, which have to deal with both the U.S. and China in the global supply chain, will face a heavy burden.

Samsung's key components and materials are currently sourced from South Korea or China. U.S. company Apple is also likely to face product price increases and supply chain disruptions if Trump's latest tariff measures are applied.

# The Jeju 4.3 records and the reforestation records have beenย inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

The Jeju 4ยท3 records document the testimonies of victims and the process of truth-finding and reconciliation regarding the civilian massacres during the Jeju 4ยท3 incident. The reforestation records contain information on how the government and the people cooperated to reforest the devastated national territory after the Korean War.

With this inscription, South Korea now has a total of 20 UNESCO Memory of the World items, including Hangul (the Korean alphabet).

# On the 8th, about 10 North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) to the south and then retreated northward.

The South Korean military immediately issued warning broadcasts and warning shots, prompting the North Korean soldiers to retreat back north of the MDL. In June last year, a group of North Korean soldiers who were working inside the DMZ on the central front also crossed the MDL to the south before returning northward.

# The South Korean food delivery platform 'Baemin' will start charging for takeout orders from the 14th.

With the policy change from free to paid, store owners who receive takeout orders through the Baemin platform will have to pay a 6.8% commission fee. Some store owners who are opposed to this have decided to discontinue the takeout service.

# The first criminal trial of former President Yoon Seok-yeol began on the 14th.

From the very first trial, there was a heated exchange between the prosecution and Yoon's side. The prosecution pointed out that Yoon had pre-planned the declaration of martial law when appointing former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyeon, but Yoon argued that "preparing for martial law is something that must always be ready, which is why there is a martial law manual at the Joint Chiefs of Staff and various training is conducted.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ทKorean Language Spotlight โ€˜์ˆ˜์„ธ๋ฏธโ€™

The English term โ€œdish spongeโ€ means the sponge used for washing dishes.

Unlike this intuitive term, in Korea, it's called "์ˆ˜์„ธ๋ฏธ[susemi], Luffa.โ€

์ˆ˜์„ธ๋ฏธ is actually a native Korean word referring to a tropical Asian annual vine plant. It blooms yellow flowers in summer and then produces fruit. The fibers inside the fruit can be used to make scrubbers!

Koreans originally used straw or these 'luffa sponge' to wash dishes, and the term has continued to be used commonly until now. However, as the industry developed and mass production became possible, Korean Susemi was also replaced by 'plastic sponge' made in factories.

Recently, with increasing interest in using eco-friendly products, 'Susemi' made from actual luffa plants is regaining popularity. ๐Ÿƒ This 'real Susemi' is inexpensive and biodegrades well in soil after use, leaving no microplastics. It's also easy to use, too. Cut the well-dried Susemi to your desired size, wet it with water and dish soap, then use it!

If you want to try this product now, search for '์ฒœ์—ฐ ์ˆ˜์„ธ๋ฏธ' (natural susemi) on Coupang or Naver Store!

Many products with plenty of reviews are waiting for you. ๐Ÿ˜‰
