1. 'Dochi Mom' parody video and Korea's education fever

Have you seen comedian Lee Suji's 'Dochi Mom' parody video causing a stir lately?

'Dochi Mom' is a new word that combines '고슴도치(hedgehog)' and 'mom'. It comes from a Korean saying, "Even a hedgehog thinks its baby is the cutest." It refers to moms who love their kids very much(too much).

People have different opinions about this parody video. Some think it's a funny joke about loving kids too much. Others feel it's making fun of moms in a bad way.

▶The parody video and its critics

Comedian Lee Suji recently uploaded a video parodying 'Dochi Moms.' It became very popular because it made fun of Korea's educational problems in a funny way.

But then something happened. Some people who watched Lee Suji's video went to actress Han Ga-in's and left mean comments. Han Ga-in's video showed her ordering food in her car while taking her kids to after-school classes. These people said ‘She did too much’ and left mocking comments about her and her kids. Han Ga-in then made her video private.

Some people say Lee Suji's video wasn't careful enough. They think it reminded people of Han Ga-in and might make fun of moms focusing on raising kids.

Others say it's just a comedy video. They think the real problem is the people who left bad comments on Han Ga-in's video.

▶Korea's Education Reality and Dochi Moms

The more critical topic might be 'Korea's education reality.' Korea's big focus on education and its problems has been shown in many TV shows and movies.

Korea's private education market is huge, worth over 27 trillion won. Jobs are becoming more unequal. This makes parents push their kids to study even harder.

An old Korean saying that means "too much is as bad as too little(과유불급).” Finding the right educational balance might be the most important and challenging thing.

2. Lee Jae-myung and his ongoing legal battles

In mid-March, the Constitutional Court will decide on President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment. South Korea will quickly start a new presidential race if Yoon is impeached.

Among potential candidates, Lee Jae-myung from the Democratic Party of Korea(DPK), who is opposed, has the highest support. He recently ranked first in a poll with 46.3% popularity.

However, Lee is also facing court trials and might be unable to run for president.

▶Who is the Lee Jae-myung?

Lee Jae-myung is a lawyer-turned-politician. He was elected to the National Assembly twice and served as Seongnam's mayor and Gyeonggi Province's governor. He ran for president in the 20th presidential election in 2022 but lost to Yoon Suk-yeol.

Lee grew up in a tough environment, working as a child laborer. He later passed the high school equivalency exam, went to law school, and became a lawyer. Before entering politics, he worked as a human rights lawyer and civic activist in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

Many people support him because of his worker-friendly background and his performance as a local leader. He's now the leader of DPK and a top candidate for the next presidential election.

▶What are the legal issues Lee Jae-myung is facing?

Lee is currently on trial for violating election laws. This trial is about determining the truth of his statements during the 2022 presidential election.

One of Lee's risks during the election was the controversy surrounding the Seongnam Daejang-dong development project. This project happened when Lee was mayor of Seongnam. There are suspicions that a particular company profited from this project and tried to cover it by lobbying various people.

Kim Moon-ki, a former Seongnam Development Corporation official involved in this case, took his own life. During the election, Lee said he didn't know Kim when asked by a TV anchor. He also denied playing golf with Kim, calling a photo of them golfing together fake.

Lee also said that "the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport threatened to change the use of the Baekhyeon-dong site" regarding another development project. He was charged with violating election laws for these two statements.

▶First trial guilty verdict, second trial decision in mid-March

The first trial court found Lee guilty of spreading false information about not playing golf with Kim Moon-ki and about the Baekhyeon-dong site change.

The court said these false statements could mislead voters and harm democracy. They sentenced Lee to 1 year in prison, suspended for 2 years. If this sentence is confirmed, Lee will lose his position as a lawmaker and can't run in the next presidential election.

Lee appealed this decision and is now waiting for the second trial verdict. He can make a final appeal to the Supreme Court if found guilty again.

3. The exchange rate fluctuates from 1,420 won to 1,460 won in just a week

Last Tuesday, the won-dollar exchange rate reached 1427.4 won. This was the first time it entered the 1420 won range since December 10, 2024. This was due to high concerns about 'stagflation' in the US, where inflation and economic recession co-occur. Meanwhile, Europe and Japan showed signs of economic recovery, leading to a relatively weaker dollar.

However, this didn't last long. Trump's statement about imposing additional tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China has caused global markets to fluctuate continuously. As a result, the won-dollar exchange rate has settled back to the 1460 won range, and it's expected to rise to the 1470 won range this week.

Meanwhile, the outlook for the Korean economy is gloomy. According to the Bank of Korea's announcement last week, the forecast for this year's real GDP growth rate has been significantly lowered from 1.9% to 1.5%. The Bank of Korea is considering lowering interest rates and closely monitoring economic changes triggered by Trump's actions.

#4 deaths in Seoul-Sejong Expressway construction site accident

Last week, a bridge's upper deck structure collapsed at a highway construction site in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, causing workers to fall to the ground. Four people died, and six were injured. Currently, authorities are investigating whether there were any issues with on-site safety measures, including searching the offices of the construction company Hyundai Engineering.

#Pharmacists are protesting against Daiso's sale of nutritional supplements

The Korean Pharmaceutical Association strongly condemns the marketing tactics of selling supplements in Daiso at lower prices than pharmacies, exploiting the trust built by famous pharmaceutical companies over decades. As the controversy grew, Ilyang Foods decided to stop sales at Daiso. Other companies are also reportedly reviewing their strategies internally.

🇰🇷Korean Language Spotlight ‘피어나다’

It's already March, heralding the arrival of spring. With the warming weather, you'll likely hear the word '피어나다[pieonada]' quite often.

'피어나다' means something is beginning, and it's mainly used in a positive sense. It also means fully blooming one's potential, like a flower bud opening.

That's why this word fits so well with March; when the semester starts, flowers bloom, and it's a good time to try new challenges! 🌸

1. For flowers and such to bloom.
   e.g. 유채꽃이 흐드러지게 피어났다.
   (The canola flowers bloomed profusely.)

2. To improve or get better.

4. For a smell or dust to rise and spread.

   (Dust rose where he had passed.)

최근 논란이 된 코미디언 이수지의 ‘도치맘’ 패러디 영상, 보신 적이 있나요?

‘도치맘’은 고슴도치와 엄마라는 단어를 합성한 신조어입니다. ‘고슴도치도 제 새끼가 제일 곱다고 한다’라는 한국 속담에서 유래된 말로, 자식을 끔찍히 사랑하고 아끼는 엄마들을 가리키는 단어인데요.

이런 ‘도치맘’을 따라한 패러디 영상에 대해 대중의 의견이 갈리고 있습니다. 혹자는 지나친 자식 사랑에 대한 재미있는 풍자로 여기지만, 누군가는 엄마의 역할에 대해 과한 희화화를 하고 있다며 불쾌감을 드러내기도 했습니다.

▶패러디 영상과 비난하는 사람들

최근 코미디언 이수지는 '도치맘'을 패러디한 영상을 업로드했습니다. 교육열에 대한 사회 문제를 풍자하는 한편, 도치맘 캐릭터를 유머러스하게 소화하며 큰 인기를 얻었는데요.

문제는 이 다음이었습니다. 이수지 영상을 본 일부 네티즌들이 배우 한가인의 영상에 달려가 악플을 달기 시작했습니다. 이 영상은 자녀들의 학원 라이딩에 나선 한가인이 차 안에서 배달 음식을 시켜먹는 모습 등을 담고 있었는데요. 몰려간 이들은 한가인이 극성스럽다며 그녀와 아이에 대한 악플을 달기 시작했고, 해당 영상은 결국 비공개 처리되었습니다.

이런 상황이 발생하자 혹자는 이수지의 패러디 영상이 사려 깊지 못했다고 말하기도 했습니다. 이수지의 영상 자체가 한가인을 떠올릴 수 있게 구성되었고, 육아에 전념하는 엄마들을 조롱받게 할 수 있는 부분이 있다는 거죠.

혹자는 반대로 이 영상은 단순 코미디일뿐이며, 잘못된 것은 이를 즐기는 것에서 끝내지 않고 특정 인물에게 악플을 쏟아부은 ‘악플러’들이라고 말하고 있습니다.

▶한국의 교육현실과 도치맘들

더 중요한 논의점은 어쩌면 ‘한국의 교육 현실’일지도 모릅니다. 한국의 거대한 교육열과 이에 대한 부작용은 그동안 많은 드라마와 영화들을 통해 알려지기도 했는데요.

한국 사교육 시장 규모는 27조원이 넘을 정도로 거대하고, 아이들이 자라서 부딪히게 될 노동시장의 일자리는 점점 더 양극화되고 있습니다. 때문에 부모들은 아이의 학습에 더더욱 열을 올리게 되는 구조적 문제에 처해 있기도 하죠.

한국에는 예로부터 ‘지나침이 모자람과 같다(과유불급)’ 라는 사자성어가 있습니다. 교육에서도 그 적당한 선이라는 것이 가장 필요하고, 또 가장 어려운 것일지도 모르겠습니다.

2. 대권주자 이재명과 그를 둘러싼 재판 공방

3월 중순, 헌법재판소의 윤석열 대통령 탄핵 인용 여부가 결정됩니다. 만약 윤대통령의 탄핵이 인용된다면, 대한민국은 빠르게 대선 레이스에 돌입한 예정입니다.

예비 대권 주자 중 가장 높은 지지율을 나타내고 있는 후보는 야당인 더불어민주당의 이재명 대표입니다. 그는 최근 여론조사에서 선호도 46.3%로 1위를 기록하기도 했는데요.

하지만, 그 역시 법원의 재판을 받는 중으로 대권 주자로 나서지 못할 수도 있습니다.

▶현 대선 주자 1위, 그는 누구인가?

이재명은 변호사 출신의 정치인입니다. 2번의 국회의원 당선 및 성남시장과 경기도지사를 역임했고, 제20대 대통령 선거에 후보로 출마했으나 윤석열에 밀려 낙선하기도 했습니다.

그는 어린시절 소년공으로 일하는 등 어려운 환경에서 성장했습니다. 이후 검정고시를 통해 법과 대학에 진학했고, 변호사가 된 뒤로는 경기도 성남시 일대에서 인권 변호사 겸 시민사회운동가로 활동하다 정치로 입문했습니다.

자신이 걸어온 노동자 친화적인 삶과, 이후 보여준 지자체장으로서의 모습을 통해 그를 지지하는 이들이 많이 생겼습니다. 그리고 그는 야당인 더불어민주당의 대표이자 가장 유력한 차기 대통령 후보로 거론되고 있습니다.

▶이재명 재판 공방, 그래서 뭘 잘못했는데?

이재명은 현재 공직선거법 위반 사실로 재판을 받고 있습니다. 이 재판은 2022년 실시된 제20대 대통령선거에서 그가 한 발언들의 진위 여부를 가리기 위함으로 볼 수 있습니다.

20대 대선에 대통령 후보로 나섰던 이재명의 리스크 중 하나는 성남 대장동 개발 사업 논란이었는데요. 그가 성남 시장이었던 시절, 성남판교대장도시개발사업이 진행되었습니다. 그리고 이 개발 당시 특정 회사가 거액의 이익을 챙겼으며, 이를 감추기 위해 법조인과 언론계 등에 전방위적으로 로비를 진행했다는 의혹이 일었고 현재까지 재판에서 그 진위 여부를 가리고 있는데요.

이 사건과 관련된 김문기 전 성남도시개발공사 개발사업1처장은 스스로 목숨을 끊었습니다. 그리고 이재명은 20대 대선 레이스 도중 김씨를 아냐는 방송국 앵커의 발언에 모른다고 답했고, 김 씨와 골프를 치고 찍은 사진에 대해도 골프를 친 적이 없다며 조작이라고 반박했습니다.

또한 그는 당시 다른 개발 사업 의혹과 관련해서도 "국토교통부가 협박해 백현동 부지 용도를 변경했다”라고 말하기도 했는데요. 이 두 건에 대해 이후 공직선거법 위반으로 기소되었습니다.

▶ 1심 유죄, 2심 선고는 3월 중순…유죄 선고되면 대선 못나와

1심 재판부는"김문기와 골프 안 쳤다"라는 그의 말과 백현동 부지 용도 변경 관련 발언이 허위 사실 공표라고 판단했습니다.

재판부는 이에 대해 "선거 과정에서 유권자에게 허위 사실이 공표되는 경우에는 유권자가 올바른 선택을 할 수 없게 되어 민의가 왜곡되고 선거제도의 기능과 대의민주주의의 본질이 훼손될 염려가 있다는 점에서 죄책이 가볍다고 할 수 없다"고 밝히며 징역 1년에 집행유예 2년을 선고했습니다. 만약 이 형이 확정되면 이재명은 의원직을 잃고, 차기 대선에 출마할 수 없게 됩니다.

이재명은 이 판결에 대해 항소했고, 현재 2심의 선고를 기다리고 있습니다. 만약 재판부가 또다시 유죄를 선고한다면 그는 최종적으로 대법원에 항고를 할 수 있습니다.

3. 1,420원 → 1,460원. 일주일만에 오르락 내리락 환율

지난주 화요일, 원·달러환율이 1427.4원을 기록했습니다. 환율이 1420원대에 진입한 것은 지난 12월10일(1426.9원) 이후 처음이었는데요. 이는 최근 미국에서 물가상승과 경기침체가 동시에 발생하는 ‘스태그플레이션’ 우려가 높았기 때문입니다. 반면 유럽과 일본은 경기가 반등 조짐이 보이며 상대적으로 달러가 약세를 보이게 된 것이죠.

하지만 이는 오래가지 않았습니다. 트럼프 대통령이 또다시 캐나다와 멕시코, 중국에 추가 관세를 부과하겠다고 발언하며 계속적으로 전세계 시장이 요동치고 있습니다. 결국 원달러 환율은 다시 1460원대에 안착했고, 이번주에는 1470원대까지 오를 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.

와중에 한국 경제 전망도 어둡습니다. 지난주 한국은행의 발표에 따르면, 올해 예상 실질 국내총생산(GDP) 증가율 예측치는 기존 1.9%에서 1.5%로 대폭 내려갔습니다. 한은은 이에 따라 금리를 낮추고 트럼프 발 경제 변화를 주의 깊게 바라보며 방안을 강구하고 있습니다.
