In summer, Korea experiences three "Boknal(복날)". The first day is called Chobok (초복), the second is Jungbok (중복), and the third is Malbok (말복).

On these days, it's said that people are exhausted from the heat, so they use the Chinese character for "lying down" (伏, 복).

Contrary to expectations that the heat will subside after the last Boknal, the sweltering heat is expected to continue for a while after Malbok. 🥵

Subak(수박, watermelon) is a quintessential summer fruit. Growing on vines, watermelons have yellow flowers in summer, and their round green-striped fruits, weighing up to 5-6 kg, contain red flesh.

Watermelons are about 90% water, making them very effective for hydration. In Korean, a whole watermelon is called a "tong(통)". The sound made when tapping a watermelon is also described as "tong". 🍉

As watermelons are synonymous with summer, their prices often reflect Korea's economic conditions. This year, many people are saddened as watermelon prices have surged, with one watermelon costing over 30,000 won. 😭 This is attributed to "heatflation," where prices rise due to extreme heat.

It's predicted that many Koreans will use their government-issued "consumption coupons" to buy watermelons.

To choose a good watermelon, look for clear and distinct color contrasts in the stripes on the rind.

Also, a large and deep yellow "bottom spot" indicates that the watermelon received more sunlight and is likely sweeter.

These days, many stores offer a service to cut watermelons, making them even more convenient to enjoy at home!

📌 Soft peaches vs. Firm peaches: The never-ending debate🍑

Koreans often ask about food preferences (For example, whether you like mint chocolate or whether you dip your sweet and sour pork in the sauce or pour the sauce over it). Fruits are no exception.

Peaches come in two main types: fuzzy-skinned ones like white or yellow peaches, and smooth-skinned ones, known as nectarines. Depending on the variety and ripeness, they can be categorized as firm peaches or soft peaches.

According to consumer trends, Koreans tend to prefer firm peaches. Due to higher demand, firm peaches are priced 10-15% higher than soft peaches!

While melons have developed a stronger sweet taste, chamoe have evolved to focus on a crisp texture. Of course, in modern times, we can find the distinctive 'yellow chamoe' that is a bit sweeter with firmer flesh.

Fresh plums have a shiny, firm skin with a stem that isn't dried out. The more white powder on the surface and the larger the fruit, the sweeter it tends to be. It's recommended to choose plums that are reddish with a mix of yellow and light green.

The plums are good eaten whole after washing, but they're also great for cooking. You can make jam by simmering them with sugar and spreading it on bread.

📌 Shine Muscat: Korea's export success story

The Nonsan Strawberry Research Institute has successfully developed countless varieties, with domestic varieties accounting for 98.4% of production.

A particularly famous variety is 'Seol-hyang(설향)'. Although it's easily bruised due to its juiciness, many people seek it out for its sweet taste.

The World Strawberry Industry Expo is planned to be held in Nonsan in 2027!

📌 Cheongsong: Apples Blooming Again After Forest Fire Damage

Gyeongsangbuk-do has long been known for apple cultivation due to its suitable climate. Among these regions, 'Cheongsong-gun' apples have become a trusted brand.

This area recently ranked first in Consumer Insight's 'Recommended Agricultural Travel Destinations'. Visitors can enjoy apple-themed experiential festivals, direct markets, and rural village programs.

The Cheongsong Apple Festival, which attracted 1 million participants online and offline last year, starts on October 29, the peak of the harvest season.

Cheongsong-gun suffered from a large forest fire earlier this year. As a result, this year's festival theme is 'Cheongsong ~ Green Again, Red Again'.
