Mr. Jay Han, the CEO of Five Stones, is a veteran in the Korean broadcasting industry. Life as a Foreigner in Korea - The Pain of Discrimination and 'Proper' Contracts
Foreigners who love Korea and stay here are living diverse lives.
The most essential part of living in Korea is undoubtedly the 'visa'. As an entertainment company, Five Stones provides E6 visas for its artist members.
In fact, there are many companies that offer unreasonable contract conditions to foreigners during the visa issuance process. They may demand things outside of work duties or not provide proper work assignments.
The Korean Ministry of Employment and Labor has a verification process to check which companies are eligible to hire foreigners. So when you're job hunting, it's important to check whether the company meets the foreign employment conditions, can actually issue the visa, and has the capability to properly support your career path after the visa is issued.
Five Stones understands how difficult it is for foreigners to find jobs in Korea, especially as entertainers. That's why they are thinking of various ways to transparently and sincerely care for their members. 🧐
▶Building a Transparent Company Rooted in Fundamentals!
There have been major issues recently with entertainment companies in Korea making their artists do tasks unrelated to their work, such as driving personal vehicles. That's why Mr. Han tries not to contact the artists directly. All matters are handled through the company and as part of the job.
They also disclose all costs transparently. When their artists are cast in a program, the relevant costs, settlements, and tax rates are shared from the beginning. These efforts help the members trust the company, he says.
To help understand the somewhat complex Korean tax system, they also provide education on VAT, withholding taxes, contracts, and year-end tax settlement.
▶The Pain of Racial Discrimination Led to the Idea of Providing Psychological Counseling
Living as a foreigner in Korea is not easy. Many people stay here because they love Korea, but they also experience various forms of discrimination that can be hurtful.
Mr. Han, the CEO, believes there is more racial discrimination happening in Korea than people think. Some have experienced bus drivers purposely closing the doors when they see a foreigner. They have also encountered strangers on the street yelling at them, 'Go back to your country!' These experiences leave wounds that require healing.
That's why Five Stones has established an MOU with a professional counseling company to provide psychological support. They've set up an easy-to-access system and are also considering implementing group counseling sessions, which are more common abroad.
Dream Big Dreams: Those with Ambition and Determination are Welcome!
Five Stones currently has 38 foreign entertainers on its roster. They come from diverse nationalities and are active in various fields, such as acting in dramas, dancing, and TV shows. There are also trainees undergoing training, but the company only accepts a manageable number they can adequately support.

Five Stones believes that you must have big dreams to achieve them. But dreams alone are not enough. The effort to back up those dreams is essential.
Becoming a signed artist and obtaining the E6 visa is just the starting line. After that, much more effort is required. You need to hone your abilities and seize opportunities as they arise continually.
Especially these days, 'Self-PR' is crucial. You need to know yourself well and actively showcase what makes you unique. If you can generate your own 'traffic' through platforms like social media, you'll be able to grab opportunities faster.

1. 외국인으로의 한국 생활 - 차별의 아픔과 ‘제대로 된’ 계약
한국이 좋아 이곳에 머무르는 외국인들은 저마다 다양한 삶을 살아가고 있습니다.
그리고 한국에 거주하기 위한 가장 필수적인 부분은 아무래도 ‘비자’일텐데요. 파이브스톤즈는 엔터테인먼트 회사로서, 소속 아티스트들에게 E6 비자를 발급해주고 있습니다.
사실 이 비자를 발급해주는 과정에서, 외국인들에게 불합리한 계약 조건을 제시하는 ‘회사’들도 많아요. 업무 외적인 부분까지 요구를 하거나, 제대로 된 일감을 주지 않는 경우도 많습니다.
한국 고용노동부에서는 어떤 회사가 외국인을 고용할 수 있는지 검증을 하는 과정을 거치게 되어 있습니다. 그렇기에 구직을 하실 때에는 외국인 고용 조건을 갖춘 회사인지, 실제 비자를 발급해 줄 수 있는지, 비자 발급 이후 커리어 패스를 잘 서포트 해 줄 수 있는 역량이 있는지 잘 살펴볼 필요가 있습니다.
파이브 스톤즈는 외국인이 한국에서 구직하는 것, 특히 엔터테이터로서 활동하는 것이 얼마나 어려운지 잘 알고 있습니다. 그래서 소속 외국인들을 투명하게, 진심으로 케어하는 다양한 방안을 고민하고 있답니다. 🧐
▶기본을 지키는 회사가 되기 위해 ‘투명’해지기로 했다!
최근 한국인을 대상으로 한 엔터테인먼트 회사에서도 개인 차량 운전 등 업무 외의 일을 시켜서 크게 문제가 되기도 했죠. 그렇기에 대표님은 소속 아티스트에게 개인적 인 연락은 잘 하지 않으려고 한다고 합니다. 모든 일은 회사를 통해, 일로 처리하는 것이죠.
비용에서도 모든 것을 투명하게 공개합니다. 방송에 캐스팅이 되었을 때 해당 비용과 정산, 세금 비율을 처음부터 공유합니다. 이런 노력들이 소속 외국인들이 회사를 신뢰할 수 있게 만드는 방법이라고 말씀하셨는데요.
또한 다소 복잡한 한국 세금 제도의 이해를 돕기 위해 부가세 및 원청징수, 계약서, 연말정산 등에 대한 교육도 진행하신다고 합니다!
▶인종차별의 고통…심리상담 지원을 생각하게 되었죠
한국에서 외국인으로 살아가는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 많은 분들이 한국이 좋아서 이곳에 머무르고 있지만, 여러 차별을 겪으면서 상처를 받기도 합니다.
대표님의 생각으로는, 한국에서 생각보다 많은 인종차별이 일어나고 있다고 합니다. 버스를 타려고 하자 외국인인 것을 보고 일부러 문을 닫는다거나, 길거리를 걸어가는 중에 누군가 ‘네 나라로 돌아가!’라고 외치는 소리를 들은 적이 있는 분들이 많습니다. 이런 경험은 아픔이 되고, 이를 꺼내 치료할 수 있는 과정이 필요하다고 생각하셨다고 해요.
그래서 파이브스톤즈는 전문회사와 MOU를 체결해 심리상담을 지원해주고 있답니다. 쉽게 도움을 받을 수 있는 시스템을 마련하는 동시에, 이후에는 외국에서 보편화되어있는 그룹 상담 형태로도 진행하는 것을 염두하고 있어요.
